A man wanted in connection with the shooting of a woman in Simcoe on June 18 is in police custody.

Norfolk OPP said Monday that crime units from Norfolk and Haldimand OPP, assisted by Thunder Bay, Ont., police, arrested the suspect in Thunder Bay.

Police said Jamel Anthony Evans, 29, of North York, Ont., is charged with: aggravated assault, careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a weapon, possession of loaded, prohibited, or restricted firearm and discharging a firearm with intent.

On June 18, Norfolk OPP responded to reports of a shooting at a West Street home just prior to 11 a.m.

Officers discovered a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment of her injuries.

At the time, police released a description of the suspect, described as a heavy-set Black man with dreadlock hair, wearing a grey hoodie and dark pants.

The suspect was seen getting into a red or burgundy coloured SUV parked on Nelson Street, last seen travelling on Queen Street South.

Investigators believe the victim was targeted.

An OPP spokesperson declined to say how many shots were fired, the age and condition of the victim, or how investigators think she is connected to the shooter, saying that information is related to the investigation and cannot be publicly shared.

The accused is being held in custody in Thunder Bay.

He will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe at a later date.
